What is the Plasma Pen?

The Plasma Pen uses plasma energy to regenerate the top, or epidermal layer of the skin while reinvigorating the deeper dermal layers through targeted heat treatment. This deep-layer treatment process, known as fibroblast therapy, enables the production of collagen in the skin, which in turn reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, even acne scars. Darker skin tones (African American, African, Latin, Native American, Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian ancestry and people of mixed ethnicities) may not good candidates for Plasma Pen.

Plasma Pen treatment is often used as a non-invasive facelift that provides an alternative to plastic surgery, as it requires just a topical anesthetic and has minimal downtime. The Plasma Pen can reduce the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet,  marionette lines, smoker’s lines, nasolabial folds, “11” lines between the brows, stretch marks, as well as acne scarring. Additionally, plasma pen treatment can help to increase both collagen and elastin, which can help to tighten loose skin along the face, jawline, upper and lower eyelids, and neck. It’s also the only non-invasive cosmetic treatment that’s FDA-approved for use on the eyelids.

How does the Plasma Pen work?

The Plasma Pen is a handheld skin rejuvenation device that converts electrical charge into electrostatic energy in order to produce nitrogen plasma gas. The precision plasma arc of the pen is able to create micro-traumas on the surface of the epidermis (akin to microneedling), while heating the lower layers of the skin to target the fibroblasts of the skin. The micro-trauma of the skin engages the natural wound-healing process of the body, boosting collagen and creating  firmer, smoother skin. The boost in collagen and elastin in the skin can be particularly effective on problems relating to loose skin, such as jowls, turkey neck, or lower eyelid skin. The plasma pen’s technology also uses ablative properties to remove the outer layer of aged or damaged skin.

What downtime can I expect after my Plasma Pen treatment?

The Plasma Pen does require some downtime while the skin heals itself and begins to regenerate. Immediately after treatment, you’ll see mild side effects such as redness, swelling, and small dots along the treatment area. Typically, scabs will form along the small dots of the treatment area, and then these will fall off after about 5-7 days post-treatment. For most patients, about a week of rest/downtime is preferred when the treatment area includes the neck or face.

How long will it take to see results?

You will typically see immediate tightening along with cumulative improvements over the next three months in the appearance of saggy skin. In some cases it may require more than one session depending on the desired results. The results of plasma pen treatment are very long-lasting, particularly when compared to other non-invasive anti-aging techniques. When patients adhere to the aftercare process, which includes sun avoidance and proper skin care, they can benefit from results that last up to three years. These incredibly long-lasting results have made the Plasma Pen a favorite among dermatologists when it comes to anti-aging treatment.

Is the Plasma Pen treatment painful?

Plasma pen treatment is not considered painful. During treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to prevent any pain, and most patients say the process causes only mild discomfort.
