RF Microneedling vs. Traditional Microneedling: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Microneedling has been around for decades, and it remains one of our most popular skin treatments for good reason: It works. But over time, the category has grown, and “microneedling” now covers everything from basic pens to advanced devices that add radiofrequency (RF) energy to the mix.

If you’ve done your research but were left wondering whether RF microneedling is worth the upgrade, you’re asking the right questions. The two treatments share the same foundation but produce different results, so the right choice depends on what your skin needs most.

At Austin Skin & Wellness in West Lake Hills, TX, we offer traditional microneedling with the MicroPen EVO and radiofrequency microneedling with VirtueRF because we love both treatments. Our team is here to break down the differences between these two approaches to help you make an informed decision about which one might be right for you.

The Quick Answer

  • Traditional microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, prompting your body to produce more collagen and elastin as it heals.
  • RF microneedling does the same but adds RF energy to heat the deeper tissues.
  • Traditional microneedling is great for fine lines, enlarged pores and skin texture.
  • RF microneedling tends to produce more tightening and firming effects.
  • Both are effective. They simply address different levels of concern.

What‘s the Difference Between Microneedling and RF Microneedling?

Traditional microneedling uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. Those tiny punctures activate the body’s natural healing/repair response, which involves producing fresh collagen and elastin — the building blocks of firm, healthy skin.

RF microneedling does the same thing, but also delivers radiofrequency energy through the needle tips to heat deeper layers of tissue. That thermal energy triggers a second wave of collagen production and contracts existing collagen fibers, producing a more noticeable skin-tightening effect than traditional microneedling.

Both are effective, nonsurgical treatments that work through similar mechanisms. The main difference comes down to the concerns you’re looking to address.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Each Treatment?

What Makes the Most Sense for Your Skin?

We could talk technology all day, but you’re here for answers. The scenarios below match common goals to the type of microneedling that produces the best results.

“I want brighter, smoother skin without breaking the bank.”

Traditional microneedling with EVO is likely your best match. The collagen response from microchannels resurfaces and refreshes the outer layer of your skin, giving it a healthy glow. Pairing with exosomes enhances your results. This is a strong fit for someone in their 20s or 30s focused on skin health, or anyone whose concerns are primarily surface-level.

“My fine lines are getting deeper and I want to soften them.”

Both devices work here, but VirtueRF produces more noticeable softening of lines that have settled in. The RF energy firms and tightens the skin for a more youthful appearance and helps restore the underlying structure for lasting results. VirtueRF also complements Botox or Dysport well, addressing the signs of aging from different directions for comprehensive results.

“I have acne scars I’ve been trying to fix for years.”

If scarring is mild, EVO microneedling can make a visible difference after a series of sessions. For moderate to deep acne scars that are pitted or rolling, VirtueRF is the stronger choice. The needles help break up the rigid scar tissue, while the RF energy fills depressions with new collagen from below. Expect four to six sessions for deeper scarring.

“My jawline and neck are losing definition and I’m not ready for surgery.”

If your primary concern is sagging or a loss of definition, VirtueRF is the clear winner. Traditional microneedling improves skin quality, but tightening requires the thermal energy that RF delivers to the deeper tissues. VirtueRF works especially well on the chin, jawline and neck.

“I want to treat a delicate area like my eyelids or under-eye skin.”

VirtueRF’s smaller handpiece was designed for exactly this. It treats hooded upper lids and fine lines below the lash line with adjustable energy levels calibrated for fragile skin.

“I want to treat stretch marks or a larger body area.”

Both devices treat stretch marks. VirtueRF’s dedicated body handpiece covers larger surfaces like the abdomen, arms and thighs more efficiently while delivering RF energy deeper into the tissues. Newer pink stretch marks respond faster than older white ones with either device.

Can You Use Both?

Yes, and some patients do.

There’s no conflict between the two, because both types of microneedling work by triggering collagen remodeling, albeit at different intensities. A common approach is to use traditional microneedling for maintenance after a VirtueRF series, or to alternate based on seasonal priorities. A patient might complete a VirtueRF series in the fall to target skin laxity, then come in for an EVO microneedling session with exosomes in the spring to refresh tone and texture.
