What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile surgical blade to scrape the surface of the skin. The blade lifts off the top layer of dead cells along with vellus hair, the soft, fine hair often called peach fuzz. After the treatment, the skin immediately has a smoother texture.

How Does Dermaplaning Work?

Your provider will gently pull the skin on the face tight while gliding a sterile blade across the skin at a 45-degree angle. Each pass removes dead cells and vellus hair but does not cut into the tissue. With the dull outer layer gone, fresh skin is exposed, and skincare products absorb more readily. The treatment also stimulates cell turnover. Frequent use can lead to a healthier-looking complexion and a more even tone.

The Benefits of Dermaplaning

  • Smoother skin texture and softer feel
  • Brighter, more even skin tone
  • Only exfoliating treatment that removes peach fuzz
  • Better product absorption after treatment
  • Makeup applies more smoothly
  • Reduces the look of fine lines and dull skin

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is suitable for most patients with healthy skin. It can be used on all skin types and tones, including sensitive skin and darker tones. It may not be recommended for patients with active acne breakouts, cold sores, eczema flares, rosacea flares or open wounds in the treatment area. Dermaplaning cannot be used in areas with coarse, thick hair, but is perfect for areas with peach fuzz.

What to Expect Before, During and After Treatment

Pre-Treatment Preparation

Don’t use any products that could irritate your skin three to five days before your treatment. This includes harsh active ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids or scrubs. You should also avoid waxing or laser hair removal in the treatment for two weeks, and stay out of direct sunlight the week of your treatment.

When your appointment day arrives, avoid putting any products or makeup on your skin and tell your provider about any recent treatments, new breakouts or skin medications you are using.

During the Treatment

Your provider will cleanse your face and pat the skin dry to prepare it for the next stage. Your skin will be treated in small sections, focusing on the cheeks, forehead, chin, jawline and upper lip. You will feel a light scratching sensation. After the entire surface is treated, your provider may apply a serum to calm and protect the newly exposed skin.

Post-Treatment Care

Your skin will feel softer right away, but may also look a little pink. You can apply a gentle moisturizing product that does not clog the pores, and protect it with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

As your skin heals, continue to avoid harsh ingredients and exfoliants. It can also be helpful to avoid anything that overheats the skin or causes you to sweat, like heavy workouts, saunas, hot showers or hot tubs. Do not pick or scratch at the sensitive skin.

How Often Should You Get Dermaplaning?

You can schedule dermaplaning every four to six weeks. This timing matches the natural skin cell turnover cycle, so each session will remove a new layer of dead cells and vellus hair growth. Your provider will recommend a schedule based on your skin type and other similar factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dermaplaning painful?

Dermaplaning is not a painful treatment because the blade does not impact living tissue, only the dead skin cells on the surface. Most patients feel only a light scratching or tingling sensation. There are no needles, and you won’t need topical or local anesthesia during the appointment.

How long do dermaplaning results last?

Results typically last three to four weeks. Smoothness and glow are visible right after your appointment, and the vellus hair starts to grow back at its normal rate, usually within two to three weeks. Most patients schedule another treatment every four to six weeks to maintain results.

Will my hair grow back thicker?

Dermaplaning does not make the hair grow back thicker. Cutting vellus hair at the skin surface does not change the hair follicle, so hair grows back at the same thickness and color as before. While the blunt cut edge can briefly feel different as it starts to grow back in, the hair itself is unchanged.

Can I wear makeup after dermaplaning?

While you can wear makeup right away, it is best to wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup. Freshly exfoliated skin needs time to settle and rehydrate. When you do return to makeup, you will notice it applies more smoothly and sits more evenly thanks to the smoother surface.

Is dermaplaning safe for sensitive skin?

In many cases, dermaplaning can be used for sensitive skin. It is gentler than chemical peels or microdermabrasion and does not involve any harsh ingredients. Patients with rosacea flares, active acne or very reactive skin should ask their provider first. A consultation at Austin Skin & Wellness helps determine whether dermaplaning is the right fit.
